Epirus Sights
Visit Ioannina, the capital of Epirus, beautifully situated
around lake Pamvotis. The city offers a great opportunity for
shopping and sightseeing. Wander around the old turkish quarter, visit various
museums, take a boat to the tiny island of Nissaki, a peaceful heaven in the
middle of the lake with its old small churches, the Philantropinon Monastery and
the Pre Revolutionary Museum or stroll around the fascinating Wax Museum. Don´t
miss the remarkable Perama Caves, Greece´s largest cave system with a corridor length of nearly 2km (Please take comfortable shoes and a jumper). Imagine
yourself back in a time to approximately 2000 years B.C. as you step into the
incredible amphitheatre of Dodoni, which is even larger than the one of Epidaurus. Dodoni,
one of the most important and oldest cities in Greece, home
also to the very first ancient oracle (Oracle of Zeus). A day to hell and back! Messopotamos, a small village 20 km south of Parga,
is home to one of the oldest historical sights in Greece. A rocky hill overlooking
the River Acheron reveals the Necromantion,
the oracle of the dead, the entrance to the mythological underworld (Hades). The Rock of Zalongo with a monument dedicated
to the "Women Of Souli" who in 1802 danced their way over the
cliffs rather than allow themselves fall into the hands of the Turks. Visit also
the breathtaking scenery of the ancient city of NIKOPOLIS.
